Thanks for visiting my website!
My name is Justin Franz and I’m a writer, photographer and editor based in the Pacific Northwest. My words and photos have been seen in publications like the New York Times, Washington Post, Travel + Leisure and Atlas Obscura.
I spent a decade working as a newspaper reporter in Northwest Montana, covering everything from government to the environment. Today, I’m the associate editor of Railfan & Railroad Magazine and a freelance writer and photographer.
Take a look around at some of my work and if you like what you see don’t hesitate to reach out.

Justin – this is Sherry Turner in Libby, MT. We are working on a grant application to complete the Shay #4 Steam Locomotive Restoration at the Heritage Museum and wondered if you could post our new Shay video and write a new story? Could you please contact me?
Regarding the article here: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/staged-train-wrecks : My great-grandfather was commissioned to be on site when train wrecks occurred at/after the turn-of-the 20th century. I have tons of actual photographs taken of the wrecks. Would this be of any interest to you or anyone you could recommend?
